The older single family housing stock of many cities are filled with minor renovations from previous homeowners. Some good, some bad. But rarely will you see one as surprising and interesting as the Nicholson Residence.

Located in Park Road, Middle Park, Australia, the Nicholson Residence by Matt Gibson (MGA+D) is a renovation of a Federation style house, which was an early 20th Century architectural style that seemed to combine Edwardian style housing with particular Australian influences.

Utilizing the long, narrow lot to the full extent, MGA+D created a striking new addition to the rear of the house that cantilevers itself to the side, reaching into the previously treed backyard while still leaving some green space for personal enjoyment. The second level features a nod to the former trees, in the form in the form of a steel sheet external graphic and interior decal of metal trees. It gives the house another layer of personality from when looking outward and when looking at it, but also balances the need for privacy between the neighbours and family within.
